Split a PDF on Mac

Break a large PDF into smaller ones by page range, such as one file per chapter or per invoice.

Pro

Download PeekPlain freemacOS 15 or later. Free beta.

How to, in three steps

  1. Open the PDF.
  2. Press ⌘K and type "Split". Enter ranges like 1-3, 4-10, then choose a folder.
  3. Open the folder. Each range is its own PDF. The original is untouched.

Pro. Splitting a whole PDF into several files is a Pro feature. Pulling a page range into a single new PDF (Extract Pages) is free.

Works offline. Your files never leave your Mac.

The PDF is split on your Mac. It is never sent to a website. PeekPlain sends no files and no usage data anywhere; see the privacy page.

PeekPlain is in free beta and some features are still arriving. The changelog lists what has shipped.

Questions

Can I just save a few pages?

Yes, and that is free. Use Extract Pages to make one new PDF from a range.

Does splitting change the original?

No. The pieces are new files in the folder you choose.

Can I split by size or bookmark?

Splitting is by page ranges you type. Splitting by size or bookmark is not available yet.

Does it keep links and bookmarks?

Page content is kept. Links and bookmarks that point to pages outside a piece cannot work in it.
