Features / Remove background

Remove an image background on Mac

Remove the background from a photo in one step and save it with a transparent background.

Free

Download PeekPlain freemacOS 15 or later. Free beta.

How to, in three steps

  1. Open the image.
  2. Press ⌘K and type "Remove Background". PeekPlain finds the main subject using Apple's on-device model.
  3. Check the result and save as PNG. PNG keeps the transparent area. Undo if the cut-out is not right.

Free. Removing a background is free. It uses Apple's built-in subject detection, so it needs a recent version of macOS.

Works offline. Your files never leave your Mac.

The cut-out is computed on your Mac. Your photo is never uploaded to a website. PeekPlain sends no files and no usage data anywhere; see the privacy page.

PeekPlain is in free beta and some features are still arriving. The changelog lists what has shipped.

Questions

What format keeps the transparency?

PNG (and HEIC with alpha). JPEG cannot store transparency, so it fills the area with a color.

Does it work on every photo?

It works best when there is a clear subject. Busy backgrounds, hair and glass can leave rough edges.

Can I fix the edges by hand?

Not with a brush yet. Undo and try again, or crop closer.

Is it free?

Yes.
